The Truth About Seceda & Lago di Braies Elopements
Thinking of a Seceda or Lago di Braies elopement? Here’s a heartfelt look from a local about what it’s really like—and what to consider if you value authenticity, privacy, and a meaningful wedding experience.
If you’ve looked up elopement in the Dolomites, chances are you’ve seen dreamy photos of a Seceda elopement or Lago di Braies elopement. But as a local elopement photographer, I’m here to tell you—the story behind the scenes looks very different.
I’m inviting you to think about if you want to look like everyone else, or if you want to focus on how your day actually feels—a truly meaningful wedding experience.
Yes, you can have those dreamy photos without anyone else in the background, we can totally make it look like in a movie—but I can assure you, you won’t feel as awesome as the photos look in the end. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about eloping with intention.
Facts and numbers around Lago di Braies & Seceda
Lago di Braies reached a new record in 2020 with 17,000 visitors in a single day (according to Wikipedia.com). To give you another anchor point: Disneyland Paris had approximately 27,000 visitors a day in 2022 (according to Roadgenius.com). That’s why in high season (July-August) you have to book your visit to get there, so the number of visitors can be “as low” as 5,000 per day — which is still a significant amount for the small location.
Seceda is easily reachable by cable car and a short 10-minute walk uphill; from the end of May until the end of October (approximately open from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm). This makes the location especially popular. It’s hard to tell how many people reach the ridge every day, but I can assure you, it’s enough to be significant for the small “Insta-Hotspot,” exactly like Lago di Braies. If you want to reach the peaks for your Seceda elopement before the crowds or out of season, you will need a 1.5h – 2h medium difficulty hike to reach the top or an overnight in the mountain hut nearby.
So I would highly suggest those well-known spots if you want your elopement to feel like you’re going to a theme park without enough parking lots, without the excitement of the rides, and with no privacy! (heavy sarcasm here)

Seceda or Lago di Braies Elopement — Worth It, or Just Insta-Hype?
An elopement at Lago di Braies looks like a dream, the atmosphere just looks like real magic. The allure of the place is understandable. The photos you see online are stunning. But do you know what goes on behind the scenes of a Lago di Braies elopement? An elopement at Lago di Braies looks like a dream, the atmosphere just looks like real magic. The allure of the place is understandable. The photos you see online are stunning. But do you know what goes on behind the scenes of a Lago di Braies elopement?
Here’s what most people won’t tell you about a Lago di Braies elopement:
You’ll need to work around the crowds. That means waking up early and planning your ceremony for around 6:30 a.m. in summer. You might even have to share the lakeshore with other people proposing, eloping, or taking photos. Imagine starting your day at 4:30 a.m. just to get ready for pictures, only to wrap up exhausted by 11:30 a.m. It feels like a shame because the rest of your day is basically lost.
You might need to rent the boathouse for the best photos. If you’re aiming for picture-perfect shots, consider reserving the boathouse (lapalafitta.com) so you have exclusive access for your session.
You will probably feel rushed once the early risers show up. People often line up at the boathouse to rent the first boats, so you may start feeling the pressure from the growing crowd.
You will get (unwanted) attention. Strangers will congratulate you—and likely take photos of you without asking. Unfortunately, that’s what people tend to do when they see someone dressed like a bride or groom.
Iconic vs. Intimate: What Dolomites Elopement Experience Are You Really After?
I often say, “the look isn’t the feel.” What you see online is usually a collection of perfect pictures—but you rarely see what goes on behind the scenes.
I like to think of it through the lens of theatre. Let’s flip the perspective: imagine a beautifully staged show. The set is flawless, the actors are brilliant, and the music and lighting are spot-on. Who enjoys it most?
The audience—the ones watching. Meanwhile, the actors and crew have to stay focused, tune out distractions, and keep everything running smoothly.
It’s the same with an elopement. If you’re more drawn to “the look” than the experience, that’s something to keep in mind.
Instead, if you prefer being yourselves and choosing a location that isn’t overcrowded, you’re likely to be more relaxed, focused on the moment, and perceive the different vibes and feels of the locations without feeling pressured or distracted. That’s the essence of authentic elopement planning, and choosing a hidden Dolomites elopement spot.
Dolomites elopement locations, sustainability, and overtourism
The Dolomites are becoming increasingly popular after being nominated UNESCO World Heritage, attracting visitors from all over the world. Some come for the long hikes, others for skiing, and many are drawn by the stunning aesthetics.
But as locals, we’ve started to feel the impact—especially in summer. Our mountains, once quiet and peaceful, are now filled with growing waves of tourism each year.
One of the biggest challenges is the rise of fast-paced tourism: people rushing through just to snap photos at popular spots, post them, and geotag the location on social media. This kind of travel isn’t sustainable.
Visiting the Dolomites for just a couple of days to tick off a bucket list doesn’t honor the depth or beauty of this place.
Here’s a more in depth article about Dolomites elopement locations, and the dilemma of overtourism in famous Dolomites locations.
So I invite you to take a different approach to show your respect for the land: follow the no-trace guidelines, stay longer, visit during the off-season, and consider exploring lesser-known locations for your elopement. It’s a more meaningful experience—and a more respectful one, too.

Read about why you would prefer secluded Dolomites elopement locations.

FAQs about Seceda elopements and Lago di Braies elopements
Is Lago di Braies Too Crowded for a Private Elopement?
From a local’s perspective: yes, it is. I don’t think that all the workarounds are worth the place. Go see Lago di Braies as a normal visitor, but definitely avoid it as an elopement location if you want a private and emotional experience of eloping.
The same goes for a Seceda elopement. I do not recommend Seceda for an elopement in the Dolomites.
Can You Elope at Seceda Without Hiking?
Yes, you can elope at Seceda without hiking, but so many people want that iconic ridge photo (especially in summer) that it’s hard to find privacy unless you’re okay with a very early or late schedule, a moderately difficult hike, or even a helicopter ride.
And again, chances are you’ll be sharing the experience with other people having a Seceda elopement or proposing.
What’s the Best Time to Elope at Seceda?
If you’d rather take the gondola than hike or arrive by helicopter, I would advise eloping at Seceda during the off-season. The best times for this are early to mid-June or October.
Keep in mind, you won’t see the lush green meadows during these months. If that’s important to you, you’ll either need to accept that it will be crowded during peak season or choose a different location that offers both greenery and privacy.
What are some hidden Dolomites elopement spots?
Smaller alpine lakes, quiet valleys, and lush meadows that aren’t well-known, are often overlooked. As a local, I can help you there.
